It's always a flattering to be welcomed home by your 110lb Rottweiler so long as he doesn't knock you back through the door! Your guests certainly won't want to be coming around after this happens to them.
Here a some different techniques you can try.
The Ignore Method
This one is the easiest on the dog.
- When the dog's front feet leave the ground, immediately turn your back to him and ignore.
- If the dog circles around to your front repeat the first step again.
- Continue this until your dog learns to stand still, sit or even walk away.
The Leash Method
This me be a less effective way if it requires time for you find your leash (and collar if he doesn't ware it).
- Put a collar and leash on your Rottweiler
- The he jumps say "Off" with a firm voice while standing on his leash to prevent him from jumping. If done properly he should not be able to jump more than a few inches off the floor.
- Praise and reward him.
The Sit Method
This is very effective means of training your jumping dog provided you have trained your dog to sit even when he's running, playing or excited.
- Whenever you sense your dog is going to jump on you immediately give him the "Sit" command.
- Praise him and reward him.
- Repeat this whenever and as often as necessary until he learns.
Try to remember, your dog is happy to see you! Don't be too harsh on him. Always try positive techniques on your puppies jumping, even if you did have a hard day at work.
