Medium to large dogs are usually more prone to develop Hip & Elbow Dysplasia. Hip or Elbow Dysplasia is not found in puppies so they can not be screened like their parents should. Hip screening methods include OFA or PennHip. OFA Elbow certifications are also available.
Hip Dysplasia
For various reasons not all breeders believe Hip Dysplasia is purely genetic. It can show up in any breed even when the parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. show no signs. Non-genetic factors such as nutrition and enviroment have to be factored in. Some researchers will point out that Hip Dysplaysia is even becoming more popular with smaller dogs. However, conscientous breeders will always clear the parents for HD through OFA or Penn Hip before breeding. Why take chances?
Hip Dysplasia is not a bone problem it is a ligament problem, bone problems are the end result. Young puppies should not run on hard surfaces like cement. In fact, Rottweilers should not run more than a mile until at least 18 months of age.
Elbow Dysplasia
Like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia is thought to be a hereditary disease but again, not all researchers agree. It is a malformation of the elbow joint(s). This should be OFA screened for breeding adults.
