Chancellor Rottweilers - Healthy Foods & Diets

Before Switching Foods

It is always important to consult with your breeder before switching foods on your new puppy. Once he has adjusted to his new home life, it will be easier on him if you decide to make make a change. Like puppies, adult dogs should be switched over by gradually mixing their new food in.

The type and brand of dog food you provide your pet is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make for him. Nutrition will directly affect every aspect of his life including longevity. His growth, coat and skin, teeth, energy level, behavior and overall well-being are just a few of the many connected health benefits linked to good nutritional foods.

Don't get lost in all the terms. You're guaranteed no better food simply because it's labeled "Holisitic" or "Human Grade" since there is no current regulations governing ingredients for the use of these terms.

Note: Ingredients on dog food labels must be listed in descending order by weight.

Holistic, All Natural, etc..

Holistic is simply the concept of holism. In the dog food world, it means no more than any other term like "Human Grade" or "All Natural" in terms of nutritional value. Learning the advantages and disadvantages of various fillers like meats, grain, vegetables, vitamins and supplements will help you understand the label and benefit your dog.

Bones and Raw Food (BARF Diet)

The BARF diet has rapidly gained popularity over the last 10 years. It is basically what it sounds like, raw and uncooked bones, meat and vegetables.

Many owners and breeders alike swear by the BARF diet while others believe it is unhealthy and dangerous to feed uncooked meats that may contain bacterial contamination like E coli. Some pet owners endorse the BARF diet to the extent of raising their own rabbits and chickens.

Be sure to understand the pros and cons for this controversial diet before switching your pet over.

The Pros

  1. Your dog will love it.
  2. Healthier than dry food.
  3. Shinier coat and white teeth

The Cons

  1. Much more expensive and dry food.
  2. Can be time consuming to prepare.
  3. Bones could fracture teeth or cause internal tearing.
  4. Parasites or bacteria could sicken your pet.
  5. May need to be refigerated.

Like everything else in life, you'll have to weigh-out the pros and cons of the BARF diet if you're considering it.

Fruits & Vegetables

These should only be given in small quantities and or as treats. Most vegetables like carrots should be steamed or chopped for improved digestion. Fruits can ferment and constipate so use in small amounts. Always start with very small amounts over a period of time and or consult with vet.

Here in no particular order are some of the healthier fruits and vegetables:

  • Carrots - rich in vitamins (also make good treats).
  • Apples - good for the immune system (do not feed the seeds!).
  • Blueberries - healthy (given as treats after meals).
  • Broccoli - rich in vitamins (steam first).
  • Green beans - low cal, rich in vitamins (steam first).
  • Spinach - very healthy (chopped and sprinkled on food).
  • Bananas - (in small quantity; a special treat).
  • Celery - chopped (good for arthritis).

Commerical Dog Foods

Fortunately for your dog or puppy, there are many good brands to choose from. Walk into a pet supermarket today and you'll probably see several isles of dog food to choose from.

Luckily for you, reputable dog food companies spend considerably more money today in research and development of "specific breed" and "specific size" dog foods than they did 20 years ago. This makes it easier on you to provide the necessary vitamins and nutrition for your Rottweiler during different stages of his life.

Most breeders feed dry food or mix it with canned food. Canned food by itself is expensive and will not keep your dog's teeth clean by itself. Other breeders will use "gravy" with their dry selection making it more appealing to your pet.
