Mother's Milk First
Puppies should never be taken from their mother until their 8 weeks old. The mother's milk gives the pups the necessary nutrients they need to become happy and healthy dogs.
What Type of Food to Feed
Rottweiler pups should already be on solid foods before coming home. Make sure to feed them a high grade "puppy food" that is designed for large breed dogs like the Rottweiler. These foods are normally formulated to help develop the bones of fast growing Rotties. Feeding your puppy food that is designed for adult dogs is not likely to have the necessary vitamins, minerals and fats a growing pup requires. Puppies need twice the energy intake of adult dogs and for Rottweilers 25% - 30% of their diet should be protein.
Dry foods are more popular than canned foods due to their lower cost. Dry foods are also healthier for your dog's teeth. Your dog will probably prefer canned over dry foods, so if you change midstream on him you'll probably have a hard time switching him back.
Brand
You will normally get what you pay for and this is the most important stage of your pet's life so don't scrimp on cost. Be sure to consult with your breeder for recommendations on the best brand to feed your puppy. Breeders will frequently add supplements to their dog's diet and maybe even raw foods. It is very common for new puppy owners to change their puppy's diet for various reasons including cost, availability and personal preferences. Try to stick with the breeder's recommended diet at long as possible if your planning on changing brands. Mix the new and old foods slowly over a period of time so they can adjust easier. Be sure to keep an eye on the puppies stool for proper consistency.
How Much to Feed
The quantity you feed your puppy is very important. He is likely to eat more than he needs at a single meal. You should be able to feel the puppy's ribs but not see them. Rottweilers should never be on a free-feeding diet, it should be portion controlled. If his bowl is not empty within 5 minutes, you are probably feeding him to much.
A good rule of thumb; you should be able to feel your Rottweilers ribs but not see them.
How Often
Puppies normally need to eat 3 times a day until about 6 month of age. If you can't feed your puppy 3 times a day be sure to give him the same amount equally divided into 2 meals. You should always feed your puppy on a regular schedule. It is much more difficult to house break a puppy if you don't.
