Chancellor Rottweilers - What Not To Feed!

You're sitting at your table, eating your dinner and up comes your best friend! You probably already know you shouldn't feed him from the table, but guess what? You might unknowingly be feeding him foods which may cause digestive problems, allergies or other conditions.

Foods You Shouldn't Feed

Although these foods may or may not be poisonous to all animals or dogs in specific, they should never be fed to your Rottweiler!

  • Alcoholic Beverages - Beer, wine or liquor
  • Cat Food - Run to the store instead, this is too high in fat and protein for a dog.
  • Coffee - Also tea or anything with caffeine like sodas.
  • Cooked Bones - Raw bones are better as they're not as brittle.
  • Grapes or Raisins - Like in cereals, candies, salads, etc..
  • Liver - Can cause Vitamin A toxicity.
  • Milk - Like other dairy products may cause digestive problems in some dogs.
  • Onions and Garlic - Like in pizzas, spaghetti, soups, etc..
  • Pits and Seeds - Apple seeds, peach pits, pear seeds, etc..
  • Raw Eggs - Contains an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of vitamin B.
  • Rawhide Bones - This includes pig ears and cow hooves, these can be hard on digestion. Nylon bones are better and are non-abrasive on the teeth.
  • Spices - Many prepared foods like frozen meats and fish can contain spices.
  • Tobacco - Or Marijuana.
  • Xylitol - As in sugar free products.
  • Yeast Dough - Can expand and cause gas in the digestive system and may lead to rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Foods That Are Dangerous

These items are considered poisonous or too dangerous to risk feeding.

  • Chocolate - Milk chocolate and especially it's more potent variants "cocoa powder" and "semi-sweet" chocolates, cause the heart rate to increase and produce irregular heart beats. This can be fatal to your Rottie and exercising afterwards is even more dangerous.
  • Macadamia Nuts - From as little as a half dozen kernels (de-shelled) can cause a tremor of the skeletal muscles or paralysis of the hind quarters. Your dog may begin panting heavily. This is fortunately a temporary condition.
  • Mushrooms - This fungi species numbers around 1 1/2 million. Certain varieties can even kill humans, enough said.
  • Onions - Also garlic (though less toxic) can cause the red blood cells to burst while circulating your dogs body. This can cause your Rottie to become breathless. Signs may not show up for several days.
  • Sugar Free Products - Contains Xylitol which lowers blood sugar levels. A pack of gum can be lethal to a small dog.

Some foods and beverages may not be included above. Always consult with your vet. Write a list so you remember to ask on your next visit.
